We’re never short of an idea or two, but it’s easy to get stuck in a rut with creative thinking from time to time.

They say there’s no such thing as a brand new idea, so you should take comfort in the fact that inspiration is all around you just waiting for you to put your own personal spin on it!

Sometimes it’s just a case of knowing where to look.

Here are 5 tried and tested ways to come up with fresh video content ideas for your brand or business.

1. Read news stories

You should stay informed about anything in the news that you think would be of interest to your customers.

Is there a new app that will make their lives easier?

A celebrity who has famously endorsed a helpful product?

Maybe there is new legislation which will affect how your customers use your product?

Find out the best website and publications in your industry and check them daily to make sure everything you create is relevant, timely and of interest.

2. Research competitors

Now we don’t want to suggest that you copy exactly what your competitors are up to, but you can definitely keep an eye on what they’re doing to stay informed and inspired.

It’s also a good idea to check what they are publishing make sure that you don’t duplicate content.

See a piece of helpful content? Why not ask if they would like to collaborate on a project?

Maybe you can respond to a great piece of content (say, a blog post) with something which adds value (e.g. a video) and be sure to credit them for giving you the idea in the first place.

This sort of digital connection shows that you’re in touch with your industry and that you’re friendly and approachable too.

3. Get feedback

One of the best ways to create videos guaranteed to please your audience is by asking them what they want to see.

You can’t do this too often (asking for ideas constantly is lazy and annoying!) but when you do it can lead to some interesting ideas.

Don’t ask directly for video topic ideas, but instead give your audience options in the form of a poll or survey e.g. Would you rather our next video was about cats or dogs?

4. Answer FAQs

Instead of trying to come up with interesting video ideas for the sake of it, why not kill two birds with one stone and actually answer the most frequently asked questions in video form?

You could also create a video with troubleshooting information (e.g. how to change the oil in your car).

5. Repurpose existing content

Look at your most popular blog articles or social media posts and think about how you can add value to these to create a video with extra information.

Read the comments on your blog posts and see what your customers are saying.

Are people asking questions? Have you touched briefly on a topic which could be expanded on in more depth? Did you have a Tweet that went viral?

Use all this data as a way to get to know your customer and address their needs and concerns.
