The importance of good audio

Making a video can be a time consuming project, but the final result should be worth all the time and effort spent on it. So when we see content with great ideas, a strong message and effective images it’s so disappointing when the accompanying audio is substandard. If you’re not sure about the importance of audio, or what the main problems can be then read on for a few tips.

It’s almost more important than the video itself
OK, obviously without the actual video there would be no need for the audio, but the truth is that a bad visual experience could still make sense with good audio. A wonderful visual experience on the other hand, is almost pointless without clear audio to go along with it. Imagine a video where someone is explaining how to make pancakes. They would start with all the ingredients, mixing them in a bowl and frying them in a pan; seems pretty simple right? But without the audio, you miss important information like what the specific ingredients are, what temperature the pan should be and what the best flipping technique is. If you heard only the audio then you would probably have a better idea of how to make pancakes than if you were shown the silent video. Don’t you agree?

Bad audio is a distraction
The most dazzling of imagery is not going to hold up against distorted or out-of-sync sound. No matter how much action is on screen, the viewer will be unable to concentrate or digest what is actually happening if they are too busy trying to work out what’s coming through the speaker. They might try and persevere, or they could resort to just shutting the volume off completely because it is such a distraction. Either way the person watching is not fully focused on what’s being shown on screen and they probably can’t understand what’s happening anyway.

Capturing good audio takes skill
Good sound production often goes unnoticed by the regular viewer, but you’ll certainly notice when the audio does go wrong. This is where good audio technicians prove their worth; capturing crystal clear sound and avoiding common mistakes which often occur in amateur videos such as picking up wind noise, not using headphones on the shoot or relying on built-in camera microphones instead of specifically chosen sound recording equipment. Anyone can pick up a camera and make a short film, but the first giveaway that your content hasn’t been professionally made will be in the sound quality.
