Why training videos are so effective

Think about how you problem solve in your day to day life.

Say, the sealing on your bath needs some attention.

It’s a small job but you’re a DIY disaster.

You could call in a professional, or ask your dad, but you’re almost embarrassed to say you don’t know how to do a simple job which probably takes about ten minutes.

Where would you go to find the answer?

And what would be the most effective way to be shown how to seal a bath without ever leaving your home?

A YouTube tutorial of course!

I did a quick search and found this three minute video from Plumberparts and I’m 100% sure I could silicone seal a bath now if I had to.

The power of video learning!

Virtual training is fast becoming the norm in the workplace as well as at home. But why is it so effective?

It’s interactive

Training videos used to be stale and boring across the board.

But thanks to technological advances and research into how our brains store new information, videos can be part of an interactive learning experience to keep the viewer engaged for longer.

For example, after a period of learning you can provide links to further reading or extra training resources.

You can ask viewers to leave comments after watching, this can improve learning as people engage in thoughtful discussions and can even inform how you create future training.

Live videos are perfect as they allow you to host Q&A style videos to help plug any gaps in knowledge.

The limited availability of live video (if you choose not to post it publicly afterwards) could also make your learners pay closer attention.

It’s efficient

For businesses, video learning might be the last piece of the puzzle to streamline training processes.

Most companies need a few things to make sure training actually happens:

  • A physical space (e.g. a meeting room)
  • A person to lead the training.

That person needs to be in that room, so depending on how many locations the business has there could be additional travel, room hire and hotel costs involved.

There might even be booklets and other training manuals to print and hand out.

Are you training all day? You might foot the bill for lunch too.

This all adds up and affects your bottom line.

Although there may be an initial cost with video training, the results are long lasting.

Employees can learn at a time that suits them, in a location that doesn’t cost you any money.

With this flexible approach you’ll keep employees happy too.

The trainer no longer needs to travel or spend time regurgitating the same content, instead they can focus on other tasks like specialist 121 training or assessing team abilities on an ongoing basis.

Or maybe you don’t need a trainer at all.

Because science says so

A 2015 study conducted by software company Kaltura concluded that 93% of teachers believe that the use of educational videos improves the learning experience

Students asked about video-instruction universally also say that video reinforces their learning, makes them feel visually stimulated, and holds their attention better than text

Additionally, information which is obtained visually is more memorable, and the simultaneous processing of both sound and video increases learner comprehension and retention.
